It's LEGOlas!

I'm mostly without power due to snow and ice storms in the Pacific Northwest, so I won't be blogging much. Here, in the few minutes that I'm connected to a generator, is another teaser poster from LEGO, featuring Legolas from The Two Towers. You can see his hairpiece adds the molded elf ears. Based on the poster, I'd guess this figure will be appearing in the Helm's Deep set, so if you want a LEGO version of Orlando Bloom, you can pick this up or try to find one of the Pirates of the Caribbean sets.

Week Links: Posters, Thor, and more

Still working on the 2011 recaps, so don't worry about that. So this week, it's another collection of links. There're more pictures from The Avengers, a couple pieces of news from Thor 2, a new promo for The Amazing Spider-Man, and a few other pieces of non-superhero movies news, including a film version of one of my favorite musicals. Also, I got a chance to see Martin Scorsese's Hugo, since its star is going to be playing Ender's Game, and I'd heard the 3D was actually well done. Turns out it was pretty good movie (#11 for 2011), though I had some trouble with the tone. Hugo was clearly made as a celebration of film, and made great use of 3D in juxtaposition to the works of Georges Méliès, but it jumped from fantastic to historic and back. Also, Hugo is a family film, so it's a little strange to see from Scorsese, but now I'm waiting to see him make a Departed-style film in 3D. He seems to understand the format better than most other directors, so you will believe you are being splattered in blood! Everything else is after the jump.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas. I hope you got everything you asked for. Now, next year, I have a recommendation for your wishlist. That right, from TheOneRing.net is this news that LEGO has landed ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit. Lego has the official site, up but it's devoid of anything other than this teasing image.

And can't believe I forgot to blog The Hobbit trailer. If you haven't seen it five times already, you can watch it in HD below.

Dwarves, heroes, and other stuff

The dwarves from The Hobbit are revealed in all their bearded glory, news from Marvel on bringing their heroes to the screen, cool commentary by io9 on a TV show that shouldn't be good, awesome LEGO, and some steps toward becoming Iron Man or Captain America. That right, it's time for another collection of links from around the interwebs.

It's the new Bilbo Baggins

This morning, EW released the first official photos from the set of The Hobbit showing off the first look at Martin Freeman as Bilbo and the familiar Ian McKellen as Gandalf. (Entertainment Weekly via /Film and TheOneRing.net)
Also, Peter Jackson announced over Facebook that Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans, the upcoming Three Musketeers) will be playing Bard the Bowman, while Benedict Cumberbatch will voice Smaug the Dragon and Evangeline Lilly from Lost will be playing a new elf named Tauriel.

Flashback: The Lord of the Rings

It's time for another entry in my flashback series. Following in the footsteps of Jurassic Park, here is my other favorite book/movie: The Lord of the Rings. Though this series was not my first introduction to fantasy, it certainly cemented it as a part of my life. I believe my parents first read the books aloud to me when I was about ten, and I'd reread them myself by the time Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring landed in theaters. And even as much as I'd loved those books, seeing the films was absolutely epic. However, as much as I'd like to launch into a diatribe about why The Lord of the Rings should be counted among the greatest books and films of all time, that's not the purpose of this post.

Weekend Links

A new image of Hugo Weaving in Captain America. The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions on Blu-Ray. More Wonder Woman cast members, why do I care? And Puss In Boots should have made my list of films I want to see.
